Bag Size & Fit Guide

Bag size names are useful starting points, but measurements and interior layout determine what actually fits. Use this guide to compare a bag with the items you carry.

Measure the Items First

Measure the longest, tallest and deepest item that must fit. For a phone, include the case. For a laptop or tablet, measure it inside the sleeve you plan to use. Add room for closures and avoid assuming that an external measurement equals usable interior space.

Understand the Three Main Dimensions

  • Width is generally measured across the bag from side to side.
  • Height runs from the base to the top edge, excluding handles unless stated otherwise.
  • Depth describes the front-to-back space at the base or widest stated point.

Curved corners, thick linings, dividers, padding and narrow openings can reduce usable capacity. A structured bag may preserve its listed shape, while a soft bag may flex around contents but offer less internal organization.

What Common Size Labels Usually Mean

Mini Bags

Designed for a tightly edited carry such as a phone, cards and a few small essentials. Phone fit is not automatic. Check the opening and interior dimensions before choosing from Mini Bags.

Small and Compact Bags

Often suitable for everyday essentials without the bulk of a tote. Interior dividers can improve organization but may limit the size of a single item. Compare Small Crossbody Purses and Mini Shoulder Bags.

Medium Everyday Bags

May hold a broader set of daily items, depending on shape and pocketing. Hobo, shoulder, satchel and bucket silhouettes use space differently, so compare the base depth and opening rather than relying on the label alone.

Large Totes and Work Bags

Created for more generous carry, but capacity and device compatibility still vary. Check handle drop, closure, base structure and the weight of the bag before it is filled. Explore Large Tote Bags and Work Tote Bags.

Check Strap Drop and Carry Fit

Strap drop influences whether a shoulder bag clears the arm comfortably and whether it fits over a coat. For crossbody carry, review the adjustable range when available. Body height and preference affect where the bag sits, so compare the stated strap details with a bag you already find comfortable.

A Five-Step Fit Check

  1. List the non-negotiable items you carry most days.
  2. Measure the largest item in its case or sleeve.
  3. Compare width, height and depth with the bag's listed dimensions.
  4. Account for the opening, dividers and closure.
  5. Review strap type, drop and bag weight for your preferred way of carrying.
